July 23rd, 2024 marked the first Culture Keepers event, a Pop-Up Experience Market held at Yoga Under the Palms Kaimuki, in Honolulu. Curator Diana Ho gathered an array of gifted indigenous artists and practitioners to share about their respective traditions.

Ayurveda in the Kitchen

What a treat to be asked not only to talk about Ayurveda in the Kitchen, but to focus specifically on lineage, authenticity, and holistic medicine literacy for a field that all too often gets oversimplified and misrepresented as a luxury spa experience in the West. Thank you for the invitation to get up on a soap box about this important issue.Yes, Ayurveda is simple and very practical. No, clinical levels of Ayurvedic practice cannot be achieved in a weekend. In India, students go to University for six years to become Ayurvedic Doctors, and study Western Medicine at the same time as part of their degree. Here in the US, there are only a handful of full-fledged schools that teach clinical level programs, like the Ayurvedic Institute. And, even then, our Ayurvedic education in the West is not nearly as complete as in India. It takes creativity and diligence to attain high-level clinical skill, and I salute those who have undertaken this challenge.

A job well done to creator Diana Ho on an incredible first event!
